In the Presbyterian Church we believe God give gifts of leadership to His people. These individuals are not set above the rest of the congregation, but set apart to a particular function within the body of Christ. The offices of leadershp are elder and deacon and those individuals given these gifts are identified by the Holy Spirit through the voice of the congregation. Once elected, elders and deacons are ordained to those offices for life - and leaders develop over a lifetime. However, the term of office served on the Session or Board of Deacons is limited to no more than 2 consecutive terms of 3 years each, without at least 1 year off. Elders and Deacons who completed their terms were then referred to as "inactive" elders or deacons. Yet this term does not reflect the belief that they are ordained (and called) for life to be leaders in the congregation.
Therefore, the Session, in 2002, established the ministry of Elders and Deacons In Service. All those ordained elders and deacons who are not currently serving on Session or the Deaconate are invited to participate. Meetings are held the first Monday of the even months of the year for the purpose of informing and encouraging these leaders to be able to continue to use their gifts for the Kingdom of God here at Windwood.
